Glorious Green

This time of year, you really start to notice the green everywhere, and I'm sure that's truer here in Ireland than anywhere else in the world. Today's card is for a man in his 80s who has spent his life as a farmer. I've used my current favourite Crafty Individuals stamps (yes, again!), which gives me the excuse to tell you that one of my cards was picked as a winner on the Crafty Individuals blog this month - woohoo and thank you!

"Happy Birthday Bobby"

As you can see from the shadows in the photograph, we have sunshine again today :-). The background & main panel were created by applying distress inks to white card with cut 'n' dry foam. After drying, both panels were stamped and brushed with Perfect Pearls, before matting and layering.

"Bottom border"

Lots of texture & dimension was added with layers of dark green angel hair, inked lace, and diecut & stamped images (these are from the Hero Arts set).

"Birdcage Charm"

This charm is covered in melted UTEE. When cooled and set, the back is inked to match the project using alcohol inks, and the charm is glued using Pinflair.

"Sentiment"

The diecut dragonfly is inked with distress inks and dried. A versamark pen is run around the edge and Perfect Pearls brushed on to give some shimmer. The sentiment is stamped and heat-embossed in clear, and gems are added along the body for a bit of added sparkle.

Mother's Day Card Number 1

Good news today, I won the Joanna Sheen Challenge and have a fabulous £30 gift voucher to spend. Woohoo, thank you Joanna!! This month's challenge is to make Spring / Easter cards, so why not have a go? Well, I finally managed to get my Mother's day cards made, and this one has a lovely Spring scene so will be my entry.

"Happy Mother's Day"

I love to see the birds singing this time of year, and this free image from the Graphics Fairy is just so colourful and makes a great focal point. The image is printed, cut out and carefully shaped before applying Pinflair dimensional glue to the back and sticking to the background. The background stamping is from a Crafty Individuals set, and another Graphics Fairy image was used for the label with a Dovecraft sentiment stamped in black archival ink. The colours on the background, lace and flowers are all using the same distress ink pads with some Perfect Pearls on the stamped bird cage for a little shimmer.

"Closeup of lace & flowers"

I love this lace trim that Lee (aka CraftyLoops) got me from the US (thanks Lee :-))

Ingredients:
Crafty Individuals CI-234 unmounted stamp set
Dovecraft sentiment stamp
Distress Inks: Tumbled Glass, Barn Door, Pine Needles
Archival Ink: Black
Perfect Pearls: Blue patina
Lace
Flower trim
Chain
Beads
Adhesives: Glossy Accents, Pinflair

Free bird

Just about everything on this card has Tim Holtz' name on it in one way or another, from the inks, to the stamps, embossing folder, diecuts, and even the distress stickles.

"Free bird"

I love playing with these birdcages (a big thankyou to Lee (Craftyloops) for sending me the birdcage & bird diecuts), but I don't like trapping the bird in the cage, so inevitably end up with the bird peeping in (he's usually looking for his mate, or a bit of food!).  It's a bit of a sad day for us because one of our hens died last night, but I like to think that she's free now. Mind you, our hens have the life of Riley with Tom to look after them! He's still updating his blog with news of our flock and we have some more little ones due to hatch next Monday, but I digress...I've made this quite a detailed account of how to make the card for any beginners who happen to be reading this. If you're an expert, you can just skip the text and look at the pretty pictures :-)

"Distressed & stamped blue background with Perfect Pearls"

There is so much going on with this card it's hard to know where to start, but I'll start at the back and work my way forward. The blank card is decorated with blue distress inks and overstamped with various meadow stamps in brushed corduroy before brushing with Perfect Pearls. It's important to let the background dry completely before using Perfect Pearls on stamping, otherwise it will just adhere to everything.

"Embossed & inked tag with distress stickles"

To colour the tag diecut (another present from Lee - thankyou!), swipe Brushed Corduroy distress inks over the top side of the wood embossing folder before passing through a roller-type machine - this puts plenty of colour neatly into the grooves in the embossing. Next, use foam to work a few other colours into the tag (I used antique linen, crushed olive & walnut stain). Distress the outer edges (I even tore the edges a little), then stain with walnut stain. Finally, the entire tag was covered with a layer of rock candy distrss stickles by wiping it on with a finger.

The birdcage was swiped with clear versamark ink, sprinkled with silver embossing powder, then heat-embossed. This was repeated until a good, even texture was achieved. The birdcage was then shaped out in the middle for some dimension, and fixed to the tag with Pinflair dimensional glue (I find this glue is forgiving and allows some flexibility).

"Hello little birdy!"

The diecut bird was inked with blue, overstamped in brown, dried, then covered in distress stickles. The branch was coloured with brown distress inks. The wing was coloured in the same way and attached to the bird with Pinflair dimensional glue.

"Butterfly"

This little butterfly was stamped with clear versamark ink and heat-embossed in gold, then cut out and coloured with distress ink to match the background. I tend to make a whole sheet of these in one go with a few different stamps, then cut them out in the evening when watching TV. Kept in a little pot on the craft desk, they can then be coloured to match your project.

"Journalling ticket"

If you want your stamping to be neat and clear, then archival or memento inks are brilliant, but you sometimes want a smudgy, grungy stamp, and distress inks are ideal for this. They seem to "splodge" a bit better (and of course, they are ideal for Perfect Pearls powders). When stamping with distress ink, it is important to do any background inking first (you don't want to blend your stamp into the background!).

To make this ticket, first cut a rough rectangle of white card and ink it with blue distress inks. Next, stamp the journalling ticket with a brown distress ink. Allow to dry, then cut out. Distress the edges of the ticket, then take a piece of cut n dry foam and use it to work some brushed corduroy distress ink around the edges. If you want your ticket to look even more distressed, add some walnut stain ink. Stamp the sentiment nice and clearly with black archival ink. Finally, add a hole with a punch and tie to the top of the tag with some ribbon, setting the ticket at an angle.

"Organza flower with button centre"

To make an organza flower, diecut organza using the Tim Holtz Tattered Floral die. Taking each diecut in turn, hold the flower on a heatproof mat (use a tool with a wooden handle like an embossing tool or similar and NOT your fingers or you will burn them), and gently heat the edges with a heat tool on its lowest setting. If you heat too much, the fabric will just melt. You just want to curl the edges. Once you have a set of diecuts (one of each is sufficient), you can just fix them together with a brad, or sew them together as I have done here, and fix a button to the centre. These were just cheap, black, plastic buttons that I coloured by dabbing with Adirondack alcohol inks in blue and silver.

Goodness, if you read all that I hope you're not cross-eyed!!

Charming Birds on a Rainy Day

The wonderful birdhouse die used in today's card was a bargain (no, really!) in the Sizzix sale.

"Charming Birds"

The background stamping uses Crafty Individuals and Hero Arts stamps with plenty of distress inks and some Perfect Pearls. After stamping and colouring, it was spattered with droplets of water to give a softer effect. In the background, you'll also see a Tim Holtz tree diecut and coloured with distress inks to match.

"Birdhouse"

The birdhouse was cut from white and dark brown cardstock. The cards were individually coloured then layered. That gold mottled effect on the brown edging is from dabbing with gold adirondack mixative. The pale birdhouse was overstamped and some more Perfect Pearls used to give the effect of shimmery leaves. It was fixed to a dark brown backing with some foam tape to create some depth, especially for the central hole.

"Charming!"

A few holes punched into the bottom of the birdhouse provide anchoring points for some appropriately themed metal charms. These were attached to jump rings and threaded onto short lengths of gold thread.

"Butterfly and bird"

The butterfly and bird (from 7Gypsies "Conservatory" stamp set) were heat-embossed in gold onto white card, coloured with distress ink, and cut out before shaping and fixing in place with Pinflair dimensional glue.

"Sentiment"

The sentiment is from a Tim Holtz stamp set stamped in black archival ink and heat-embossed in clear, before matting and layering onto Spellbinders Labels diecuts (inked to match the rest of the card).

A birdie birthday.

There are celebrations in the Izzwizz house today - our very first little baby chick has hatched! We have kept hens for ten years, but this year we are breeding our own for the first time and we have little tweeting noises coming from the spare room. My husband, Tom, has just started his very first blog here to write about our hens and will be posting some pictures later on. In the meantime, here's a birdie birthday card to be going on with:

"Happy birthday little chicken"

The stamps are from Crafty Individuals and all the colouring is with three distress inks (Dusty Concorde, Milled Lavendar and Stormy Sky). The background is made much lighter by rubbing all the stamped images with silver Perfect Pearls. This also gives a lovely shimmer effect. The main panel is stamped in black archival ink for contrast.

"Embellishments"

There are lots of embellishments, so the colour scheme has been kept very simple. The row of flowers was sent to me by my very good friend Lee aka CraftyLoops (thanks Lee!). They come as a sheet that you can cut into blocks or strips and she did tell me where to get some more, but I've forgotten (d'oh!). The flowers were originally white, but I coloured them with two colours of distress ink to match the card.

"Bird in branch"

The bird in branch is a Marianne die-cut and has been cut & embossed in silver mirror card. The embossing really gives some texture to the leaves, as well as adding a little eye & wing to the bird. It is fixed on the card with Pinflair glue to raise it up and add a little dimension. The branches at the bottom of the card are also from this die-cut, with the bird removed. The silver butterfly is die-cut from a Marianne butterfly set.

"Sentiment"

The sentiment was stamped in black archival ink and heat embossed with clear embossing powder. The stamp was in a set that came free with one of the cardmaking magazines. The sentiment was diecut from a labels Nestie and coloured with matching distress inks before layering onto a Silver mirror card diecut, embossed and edged with black promarker pen.

Both panels were matted and layered onto silver mirror card and black card before arranging together with some purple and silver lace (the purple lace started out white and was coloured with Dusty Concorde distress ink to match).

So, happy 0th birthday little chickie!

Botanical

I love those old Victorian botanical drawings, and the stamps on this card are all taken from the 7Gypsies "Conservatory" set.

"Nature"

I recently acquired some really good quality 300gsm cardstock, and it's been fun playing around colouring and stamping straight onto the card. The background here was coloured with distress inks and dried before stamping in Brushed Corduroy and decorating with gold Perfect Pearls (I can't get enough of these at the moment!). The main image was stamped in brushed corduroy. Masking techniques were used to block areas for distress colouring, then the individual stamps were gently coloured using a watercolour brush dipped in water & a little of each distress ink colour. Keeping to a muted & limited colour palette helps tie all the elements together.

"Side view showing dimension"

With so much stamping and colouring going on, the layout has been kept very simple. The main image panel was matted onto a thin frame of hammered gold cardstock (to match in with the perfect pearls), and layered onto the background with a thin strip of gold & deep pink lace. The (Tim Holtz) sentiment is simlarly coloured, matted & layered using the small oval & scalloped oval Nestabilities from Spellbinder. Both panels were adhered to the card using Pinflair to add some dimension.

"Butterfly"

For added interest, one of the butterflies was stamped in black archival ink onto thin acetate, cut out and the wings shaped, then stuck to the main image with glossy accents.

Vintage birthday card

A big thankyou to Kathy from Docrafts who was my Christmas swap partner this year, and sent me some absolutely gorgeous lace. Some of it is used on this card and I hope she approves.

"Vintage birthday card"

The design is mostly achieved with distress inks & Tim Holtz stamps. The background has gold Perfect Pearls rubbed into the stamping for lots of shine.

"Closeup of main panel"

The stamping from the background is repeated on the main panel in a darker colour. The sentiment is stamped in black archival ink, distressed, and diecut in layered ovals before fixing to the main panel with Pinflair.

"Butterfly"

A couple of butterflies are stamped and heat-embossed in gold onto white card before colouring with distress inks, cutting out and fixing to the card with the wings raised to add a little dimension. This design folds neatly flat for posting at the standard letter rate :-)

A Tribute to Tim Holtz - 12 Cards of Christmas - Card 3

This card is my favourite of the series so far, based on Tim's Tag 3 from 2010. If I'm whetting your appetite, Tim Holtz announced on his blog this week that there will be 12 new tags for 2011 starting from December 1st - woohoo, I'll definitely be playing along since this will be the first Christmas I have a blog :).

"12 Cards of Christmas - Card 3"

To start with, the card is inked and stamped with distress inks. Tim used a spotty stamp to make a snowy background on his tag; I used a fabulous crackle stamp from the Indigo Blu "Alice I" set with clear ink and white embossing powder to make an icy background, which you can see in the picture below:

"Tree charm"

The charm is a cheap one from China, decorated with seed beads held in place with tiny dots of Pinflair glue, and strung onto a length of gold, tinsel ribbon.

"Sentiment"

I love this sentiment with elves spelling "HAPPY". It was a free image printed from Magic Moonlight's blog onto cream card and the edges distressed with inks.

"Bird"

This is one of the birds from the "Caged Bird" die cuts that my good friend Lee sent me, coloured with distress ink, stamped with script stamp, and covered in holographic glitter glue, following the instructions exactly as for the one on Tim's tag. In the background, you can see the stamp I used from a Papermania set.

The topper was mounted onto a green, pearlised card blank with some gorgeous red & green shimmery ribbon tied around the card and into a generous bow for an extra bit of dimension.

Robin Redbreast and Tim Holtz' birdcage die

Yesterday we had swallows; today features a bird more traditionally associated with Christmas cards, the robin. My good friend Lee sent me these Tim Holtz' caged bird die cuts (thank you!). This die will definitely be going on my Christmas list this year!

"Robin"

The background paper was matted onto red card before sticking to an A5 card blank.

"Bird cage"

The bird cage has been heat embossed with verdigris embossing powder (basically a mixture of copper and green). The cage was then gently bent into shape and decorated with lace & roses before adhering to the card with Pinflair. The lace was carefully chosen to look like vines, and I thought the red roses could be mistaken for tiny poinsettias on a Christmas card, at least they match with the backing paper quite well.

"Robin die cut"

Mr Robin is coloured with various brown promarkers. The red breast is covered with red glitter using a Sakura Quickie glue pen and ultrafine glitter, and the rest of the bird is covered with a thin layer of holographic glitter glue using a finger to spread it all over. After careful shaping, the wing is attached using Pinflair dimensional glue.

"Robin cameo"

This is my favourite part of the card - the robin cameo. I printed a Graphics Fairy image of two robins very small, then cut out an oval and adhered it to the cameo with Glossy Accents. The recess was then filled with Glossy Accents. The overall effect once stuck to the card is supposed to be of a picture frame on the wall featuring the robin and his wife.

"Alternative Robin card"

I thought you might like to see this alternative version of the card with decoupaged robins and a pretty sentiment. This birdcage was heat embossed with a couple of layers of Antique gold to achieve a gritty, gilded effect.

Christmas swallows

First, let me apologise for the dark pictures - it can be hard to find a bright day in Northern Ireland at this time of year! The theme today is swallows at Christmas. I love this picture and it is so typical of the Victorians. Of course, there aren't any swallows around now, they've all flown South for the Winter, so what on Earth are they doing on a Christmas card? LOL! Just a little memory of the Summer and of the next Summer to come. We have swallows nesting here and I love to see them returning year after year from their long journeys.

Christmas Swallows"

This gorgeous image is of course from The Graphics Fairy's blog - thank you Karen for all these lovely free graphics. I printed a couple of copies and cut out various bits for extra layers to add some depth. That telegraph pole looks very like a cross to me and I love the moody, Winter sky.

"Flowers"

The large flowers are handmade from flat white paper flowers coloured with promarkers and layered. The smaller ones are from a bargain shop and were orginally cream, but were also coloured to match.

"Charm"

I love this little bird!

Blue tit Christmas

I finally made a start on my Christmas cards this week and thought I'd share this one with you first.

"Blue Tit Christmas"

Birds always make good subjects for cards and this fabulous Graphics Fairy image is no exception to the rule. The sentiment was cut from another vintage image, and the acetate tunnel construction gives lots of depth to add extra blue tits flocking around the crumbs. There's even one peeking at you from behind a snowflake in the bottom right of the card.

This same image has been used on a few cards and there's a better one for you tomorrow if you fancy another visit :)

Anniversary cards - a Balloon, a Pop-up Heart, Two Swans and lots of Love!

I got a bit carried away on our last wedding aniversary. Couldn't decide which card I liked best and ended up giving my husband not one, but three cards! I just love the image on the front of this card, yet another free one from the Graphics Fairy.

"Anniversary card number 1 - front"

The flowers are from organza cut with Tim Holtz' Tattered Florals die and then singed around the edges with a heat tool before layering together with brads. You need to use the cheap organza, not the real silk fabric, or you don't get the right affect. I use a pokey tool or embossing tool to hold the fabric down onto a heatproof mat while I heat the edges. Work quickly and bring the heat in from the outside in, or you'll just end up with a lump of molten plastic! Probably best to keep the windows open too - you never know what nasty fumes you'll get from heating plastics.

"Anniversary card 1 - inside pop-up heart"

My husband must get bored saying how nice my latest card is, so I try to give him a "Wow" on the inside of the cards when I can. I was in a "love you so much it hurts" mood when I made this one :). The die cuts are Spellbinders "Fallen Angel" set.

"Anniversary card 2 - True Love"

Swans mate for life. I was lucky enough to meet my soul-mate and we have been married for over twenty years now. I just love this Kanban topper and the way the swans' necks form a heart.

"Anniversary Card 3 - Love"

The basic design for the third card was a blatant rip-off of a card featured in an article in "Craft Stamper" magazine, but whilst their card was carefully stamped & embossed, mine used up a sheet of red & gold heart-themed peel-offs, and I had some unusual embellishments for the tag inside the card:

"Anniversary card 3 - tag"

Yes, you see correctly - there's a tea caddy spoon attached to the key! I thought it was a nice variation on the "love spoon".

"Anniversary card 3 - inside"

The unusual part of this card is the integral box of chocolates with a heart-shaped aperture covered in acetate to stop the chocs falling out (as you can see, most of the choccies have been eaten :)).

Hope you all have a good weekend x
